Subliminal Messages....Mind Control!

A popular theory in the world of psychobabble is that television adverts that use subliminal messages will make you buy things you don’t want.

This false assumption comes from a study by Vicary in the 1950s. Vicary added frames that flashed the phrases "buy coke", and "buy popcorn", into cinema films and found that coke and popcorn sales increased by a significant amount. This caused mass-panic and even led to new laws being passed to prevent the use of subliminal messages

However this study has since failed to be replicated with Vicary himself saying that his study was published prematurely and not enough testing had been done for such conclusions to be drawn.
